September 24, 2003 — Exuberantly 80 in Atherton The Almanac Community section

Maybe it was the costumes and the music, or maybe it was the gin, but the party to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Atherton's incorporation, held September 12 in Holbrook-Palmer Park, seemed to capture a lot of the exuberance of the 1920s. Partygoers exuberantly threw themselves into the Charleston, ate birthday cake and admired a fleet of pristine Model A Fords, courtesy of Athertonian Louis Matis and the El Camino A's. Supporters of the new Tennis Committee's fundraiser to refurbish the town's tennis courts were easy to spot in their period tennis togs, hobnobbing with neighbors dressed as gangsters, flappers, society swells, and bit players from "The Great Gatsby".
